Welcome to . . .
St. Matthew The Apostle Parish
Dear
Fellow Pilgrims on the information super highway,
Remarkable as this technological boom may be that has brought us websites, chat
rooms and the like, I would like to tell you about a genuine miracle that is
taking place here at St. Matthew Parish.
We are a
Black Catholic parish in the heart of North St. Louis, Missouri. We have borne
the brunt of all the big city ills this nation has to offer: urban flight,
homelessness, racism, gangs, poverty, blight, shattered families, drugs,
violence, and all the rest. But this web page is a small symbol of the miracle
that now transforms our parish and our neighborhood.
In 1998,
St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church initiated a program called
“Revitalization 2000.” Our strength is Jesus Christ present in our midst as we
gather for Eucharist. Inspired by the graces of that Sunday morning
celebration with its lively Gospel music and sincere human warmth, we go to work
rebuilding this church and this neighborhood. Black and white, young and old,
male and female, city and county, we have pooled our strength to renovate our
church, to build a new parish hall and renovate our gymnasium, and to host the
De La Salle Middle School which the Christian Brothers founded in 2001. We are
now beginning an evangelization thrust into our neighborhood, as well as new
initiatives for our youth and young families. Now this website has come back
to life. You will find here the rich history and tradition of St. Matthew
Parish, along with information about the various aspects of our parish life. I
pray you will enjoy it. Know that we would be delighted if you would join us
as we worship God together and as we build God’s reign here in the Ville
Neighborhood.
God’s
Peace!
Father
